Liberating breathing (Frigörande andning)

DAGBOK Permalink0

I experienced something very different this weekend. It is called liberating breathing.

At Väddö, an island connected with bridges to the mainland of Roslagen (the nordic part of Stockholmsregion) there is an old farm, rebuilt with great taste and respect for the soul of history and tradition.

The place is called The University of Life (in Swedish: Livsuniversitetet). The activities are organized in three physically separated but conceptually connected buildings: A cultural hall where concerts, theater and dance are happening summertime. A hotel with a concept of collectivity, many home-like rooms, common bathrooms and a big kitchen with an open space dinner room where twenty people can cook and eat together.

On the parking of The University of Life we are welcomed by this fantastic artwork and a free mini-library:

The concept of the teachings in the University of Life is recreation, finding balance in your emotional life and a constructive way of living, based on enjoying the simple things in life. Another part of the concept is togetherness - to break the pattern of alienation to others and reconnect to other humans, to see the goodness in the eyes of a stranger as I write in my latest book The Door. Please feel free to share the quote in social media.

Who is the founder of all this? Well, I am honored to know Lena Kristina Tuulse. She is 79 years young, a very tolerant and wise woman. She is a teacher in sports, teacher in yoga, she is an educated psychologist and family therapist, she and her family created a well known recovery center which have saved many poor souls trapped in crime and addictions, she is a spiritual guide as well as author to the book Lust for Life (Livslust). I have read the book and it is a biography where a guide for a constructive way of life is inweaved. I can recommend it. It is a very down-to-earth way of writing that reaches many hearts. The subtitle of the book is "the way to love and life".

What is liberating breathing? I have heard a lot about liberating breathing. It is not the yoga breathing, and it is not just taking a deep breath under hypnotic music and talking. If I can compare it physically it is like long distance running or skiing. Why this example? Because during a period of 50 minutes you take very deep breaths without making a paus. Not taking this natural paus stresses up the body in a very kind and positive way. This stress releases huge emotional power stored in our subconscious. That's why any person who experiences difficulties with their balance, who feels alone, who feels uncontrollable fear, who has lost someone or something significant in their life, who suffers from anxiety and depression might find a valuable method to manage and handle those problems.

We were eight disciples and two breathing guides. I always thought that I could do this on my own if I wanted, probably watching youtube instructions but I was wrong. I got tired all the time and quit breathing. So you need someone to remind you all the time to keep breathing the correct way. I believe that if you have done the liberating breathing several times with a guide, then you can practice if you hold a strict discipline. Then the concept of coming on friday evening and sleeping at the University of Life, being there half the weekend generates a safe environment, a place where you can get unconditional platonic love from a stranger, make new friendships, reconnect to other human beings, release your trauma and talk about it. The food menu was vegetarian and you could take with you something more you would like to eat. It was a very free and non judgemental mood.

We had a great moment of sharing our experiences. Every person experienced the breathing liberative in an individual perception. It was interesting to hear and experience, and if you choose to come you might feel lighter, easier, braver, loved after a weekend session.

The good thing is that a weekend like this (24h) costs at about 350 euro/dollars in Sweden. The concept of the University of Life is that people help each other with the simple things in life like making breakfast, cleaning and talking. This is not only to keep prices down but to reconnect as well. A cost for a weekend with liberating breathing in two sessions, on yoga pass, a lot of psychological therapy, three meals and a bed to sleep in is at about 170 euro/dollar. I think it is worth it. Here in Sweden half of the population lives alone. Loneliness and alienation in the Scandinavian society has never been as extensive as they are now. So for all the singles out there it is a "must do".

I publish here the contact of Lena Kristina if someone is interested to experience.

What was my experience of liberating breathing?

I released a lot of trauma and I was a little surprised where it led me to… I re-experience the moment of giving birth, not physically but emotionally. I felt the greatest disappointment in my life because I did not get any love or support from my partner in this extremely delicate moment of vulnerability. So because of that I carry a lot of hate in my heart. Some of it was washed away with many many tears. No one cried there as much as I did. But crying is a strength, not a weakness. Many people can not get it. I saw it in their eyes, but it is their choice of perspective.

Another interesting thing was that an American lady with the name Morgan Hawthorn was there making a documentary about alternative remedies and healing methods. I really look forward to watch the documentary and link it to You.

I do not recommend liberating breathing in my book The Door, but when it will be printed on paper, I will definitely add this method for managing trauma. I do not think it is as good in panic situations, but with periodial anxiety and depression, it might achieve miracles.

At the end I gave a piece of my recycled art to The University of Life and it was very appreciated. I am happy my old useless frying pan got a whole new purpose...
